Veggie Tales Part Deux

Some of you more dedicated readers may remember my post about vegetarian 'que "Sowee! That's some Carrot!" Well, I have been continuing to do some research and was delighted when Sarah pointed out that they now sell vegan 'que sandwiches at the Student Stores. Always willing to sacrfice my taste buds to food science, I set off to buy myself a sandwich.

Stick with the pork. As you can see from the photos, this sandwich was $4.25, plus tax which got me a kaiser roll topped with a thin smear of "vinager" sauced tofu.

First off, I thought the price was a rip. Say you buy a bag of kaiser rolls. There are usually 6 in a bag for about $3 (at most). That's 50 cents per roll. Then, there is the sauce. Vinager is cheap and there can't have been much in the sauce. And lastly, the tofu. There was MAYBE a fourth of a container on my sandwich. If you add in the plastic container and the delivery, this should at most be a $2 sandwhich. Aren't vegetables supposed to be cheaper than meat?

Secondly, and most important, the taste. It tasted a lot like cheap kaiser roll, which I think was due to the niggardly amount of tofu on the actual bun. What little tofu/sauce I could taste tasted more like tofu Sloppy Joes rather than tofu 'que. The sauce definetly had more tomato than vinager in it and it was quite sweet.

However, all it not lost. It shows me that dear Marilee need not be left out of Sarah's and my quest, just that more work needs to be done to provide her with some 'queish item to eat.

1) I think the sauce needs MAJOR work.

2) The tofu should be grilled before being chopped and sauced. I think that might help mimic the smokey taste you get from even the most mediocre 'que.

3) Fill the bun with stuff man! There is no need to be a miser with the goodies. 'Tis the season for Scrooge to reform!

4) Include the coleslaw. I know they make vegan mayo and it's not bad. Give the poor person the whole experience. Vegans already have to miss out on cheese, why punish them more? Plus, no self-respecting 'que sandwich in NC would come without the slaw. Plus, think of all that added fiber from the cabbage.

My rating--

WAIT FOR SOMETHING BETTER

With hope for better,
--Jennifer

Jennifer's economics background came out in this post.... I was going to try the vegan 'que myself, but, um, I think I'll pass now.

BBQ is for meat. Veggies need not apply.

PS. My brother ended up frying a turkey too for thanksgiving!
